I have recently graduated from a Bachelor of Business degree with a major in Economics and International Business. I was interested in working with council in their Economic Development department as soon as I fell in love with my economics courses at University. The moment that there was an intern position in the Industry Advancement team within the Economic Development Branch, I applied.
The Industry Advancement team is a vital player to the local economy with a focus on growing and evolving our local businesses and supporting new businesses coming to the region. The opportunity to work in this team allowed me to gain a deeper understanding of the current Sunshine Coast economy including the key players in our innovation ecosystem as well as the exciting plans for the future of the region.
Throughout this internship I have worked on a number of projects to help grow the local economy and increase the efficiency of our team’s daily operations using integrated IT systems and artificial intelligence. The main highlights of my time with council have been working on the 2019 Boulder/Denver business mission which is an overseas mission targeted at local business to assist them in developing international networks and learning global best practice.
The best part of this internship was the team I was lucky enough to work with every day. The team is composed of highly intelligent and widely diverse individuals who are incredibly supportive. From the first day of this internship I felt like a special part of the team. They never hesitated in answering my many questions and were willing to go beyond their job roles to tell me about their own career and education paths and show me what they do at council.
I have done several previous internships and this by far has been the most rewarding program I have participated in.
