I am in the final stages of completion of a Bachelor of Laws at the University of Southern Queensland.

During my time at council I worked with the Corporate Governance team in Corporate Risk and Insurance to develop a legislative compliance database. I applied for the Sunshine Coast Council’s My Summer Workplace program because I hoped to expand on my previous experience working in insurance and risk and apply what I had learned during my studies.

The team were very welcoming and were proactive in exposing me to as many areas as possible, including insurance policy and claims management, legislative compliance and risk framework review. I also enjoyed assisting with research for the creation of anti-fraud and corruption training.

A highlight of my internship was meeting members of council's legal team at the Corporate Induction which led to the opportunity to attend a trial at the Planning and Environment Court in Brisbane with them. This really highlighted the networking opportunities that were available as part of the MSW Internship.

The MSW internship is a unique opportunity to broaden your work experiences, learn more career avenues and make professional connections. I now have a better understanding of Excel, procedure development and implementation, legislative compliance, and of local government operations. The aspect I appreciated most about the internship was the supportive learning environment that was provided. Even as an intern I was treated as a valuable member of the team and always felt able to ask questions and seize opportunities to learn. I am glad I took the chance to step outside my comfort zone and would highly recommend the experience to anyone considering it.
