I have studied a Bachelor of Urban and Regional Planning at the University of New England.
My name is Michael and I am a recent Urban and Regional Planning graduate.
Short on practical planning experience during my degree, I applied for council’s My Summer Workplace position with Express Services, intent on broadening my knowledge and applying the planning processes and concepts I had learned at university.
During my internship, I worked in a fast-paced team environment, under the guidance of highly-skilled, knowledgeable staff, charged with engaging with residents to provide accurate and timely advice and solutions in response to their development queries.
Operating within this environment helped hone skills in:
- Interpreting and applying the planning scheme and relevant policies
- Determining council’s requirements for different types of development
- Communicating effectively within a team, and with internal and external clients.
My time at council has also provided great insight as to how council functions on a regional scale, including the steps taken to address emerging planning issues as they arise.
Offering valuable discipline based insight and experience, support, and learning opportunities, I would certainly recommend the My Summer Workplace program to students or new graduates.
