I have studied Economics and International Business at the Queensland University of Technology.
Applying for the Sunshine Coast Council’s My Summer Workplace program was really a no-brainer for me. I’d grown up on the Sunshine Coast for most of my life, I have a real passion for economics and public policy, and I had previous experience working in a local government environment. I applied for the role as soon as I’d found out about the opportunity online and was lucky enough to be granted an interview.
Fast forward three months, and the experience with council has been very worthwhile. I was assigned to the High Value Industries team within the Economic Development branch of the council. I’ve managed to work on quite a few different areas including a research and scoping study into the digital skills gap at a local level and strategies on which to address this into the long-term, preparing documentation for the council’s awards applications, as well as the creation of briefing documents for my boss’ upcoming innovation mission.
The team here at council has been absolutely fantastic, motivated, warm and welcoming. What struck me most was the team’s sheer willingness to task me with some quite important project work – surprising for an intern, which is very re-assuring to know that you have some real responsibility.
I’ve had such a great time here at council – I’ve honed a great deal of administrative, research and project-based skills alongside some genuinely terrific people. To anyone thinking about applying for a position within the High Value Industries team at the council, I couldn’t recommend it highly enough.
