I grew up on the Sunshine Coast and have always loved where I live, yet I have always held the assumption that I would have to move away to start my career. I had not previously considered working at the council, but actually discovered the diverse career opportunities the council offers when I began looking for work. I came across the My Summer Workplace program when searching for a job, and saw it as great opportunity to gain some more marketing experience and make some connections within the council.

I was offered a position within ICTS. Coming from a marketing background, I had no idea what to expect when I started the internship, yet the role definitely exceeded my expectations. On my arrival, my supervisor Neil made me feel extremely welcome and was more than happy to offer me advice and guidance throughout my time at the council. I was also lucky enough to work with Terry, Yvette and Carole and Shane, who were so encouraging and enabled me to focus on my strengths and what I could bring to the council. All members of my team really helped make my experience within the council a positive one.

In my time at the council, I was given the opportunity to implement my marketing skills and knowledge across a variety of IT events and projects. I specifically worked on creating marketing strategies and promotional content within this area. I also had the chance to implement my graphic design skills, which is something I had been working on before receiving the position in the My Summer Workplace program.

The program has been very beneficial and has motivated me to acknowledge gaps within my own skills and knowledge, and to work on improving these. It has aspired me to be a confident communicator and to make the most of every opportunity.

The My Summer Workplace program provided me with an insight into what working within the council entails, and the diverse opportunities it offers. Most importantly, the experience has shown me the importance of good communication and networking as a tool for career development.

I would definitely recommend this program to other students as it is an opportunity to receive guidance and feedback from professionals working in the field, whilst also gaining real-world experience.
