I first heard about the My Summer Internship program through a friend of mine who had completed the program the year before, and said how beneficial it was to her. Throughout my time at the Sunshine Coast Stadium I have completed a number of different tasks, and worked on a number of different projects including, but not limited to:

  • Customer service
  • Meeting and liaising with stakeholders
  • Marketing of events
  • Procurement training
  • Event volunteer services
  • Development of the 2017 NRL pre-season event plan
  • NRL event coordination

I believe that throughout my internship I was able to offer my resources, a fresh mind and new ideas to the Stadium team, while still learning so much along the way. I believe I brought a number of skills to the workplace, including time management and organisational skills, stakeholder management skills, effective verbal and non-verbal communication and the ability to show initiative and work independently when needed.

My internship was made much more enjoyable thanks to the people that I work with. With such a vast dynamic of personalities and traits, I was able to learn so much from each person and therefore build on my own knowledge and skill base. I am always motivated by hard working colleagues who have such a great work ethic, and I was lucky to find that within this team. In addition, everyone within the office was also so supportive and willing to help with anything I needed, this made it easy to come to work every day, knowing I had developed a good working relationship with those around me.

The My Summer Workplace program has confirmed that I did choose the right degree, and that I’m working in the right industry. I love that the events industry is so dynamic and always changing as this means that there is always something new to learn. This industry will also keep me busy which is something that I look forward to.

This program would be so beneficial to anyone who is completing, or who has just completed their university degree. It helps you build on and apply all the theory you learned throughout your degree, but also allows you to build the extra skills and knowledge that you need to succeed in the workplace. The MSW program allows you to gain the experience you need and develop networks of people to help you get to where you want to be. You will develop knowledge and skills that you hadn’t ever considered, and if you put in the time and effort, people will notice and you will be on your way to a successful career.
