Managing Trade Waste

Managing Trade Waste

Controlling trade waste and minimising its impact on the sewerage system and the environment are important responsibilities of Sunshine Coast Water.

What is trade waste?

Trade waste is liquid waste from industry, business, trade or manufacturing premises that use water in their processes. It is not toilet waste, household waste from kitchens, showers etc., or stormwater.

Managing trade waste in council

The legislation governing the discharge of trade waste to council's sewerage system is the Water supply (Safety and Reliable) Act 2008, which is available on the Queensland Legislation website.

The objective of council’s trade waste management program is to control the discharge of trade waste into the sewerage system and to collect and treat commercial and industrial sewerable liquid waste in an environmentally responsible manner.

Council's trade waste policies set out requirements to achieve this objective. The policies also promote waste minimisation, water conservation and recycling. Another important aspect is preventing harm or injury to Sunshine Coast Water employees. Council will review the trade waste policies and management programs of the three former local authorities as part of an overall review of council's policies and procedures. As a general guide, until this review is completed and council has developed and endorsed a new trade waste policy or source management policy, the existing policy relevant to the area where the discharge occurs will apply.

Further information is available on the trade waste fact sheet [PDF 55KB]. Please direct any queries relating to the policies to Sunshine Coast Water's contact officer via or telephone 5475 7200.

Trade waste guidelines

Trade waste includes substances like grease, oils and solids resulting from the discharges from commercial businesses such as food outlets, laundromats, service stations and vehicle repair workshops, equipment hire centres and printers. These substances are detrimental to the sewerage system and the sewage treatment processes and could also place treatment plant operations and maintenance personnel at risk.

Council's Trade Waste Pre-treatment Guidelines [PDF 45KB] outline the common industrial and commercial processes which discharge trade waste, and include a guide to the associated pre-treatment requirements.

Businesses that generate trade waste are required to complete an Application for Approval to Discharge Trade Waste to Sewer [PDF 67KB] and lodge it with Sunshine Coast Water.
