Osprey Nest Relocation
Moving anywhere can be a challenge but when your home is showing signs of wear, and when the foundations start to get a little shaky, it’s time to look elsewhere.
In the case of Noosa’s favourite ospreys, that move meant a new home only 100 metres away! Their nest is now perched on a pole 12 metres higher than their previous home in a dead tree on Beckmans Road. Over the years, these iconic birds have become favourites to many local families and council has done its part to make sure the osprey nest reached its new location safely.
The osprey nest relocation was carefully planned for months. Council worked closely with its project partners, Energex, Telstra Country Wide, and the Queensland government departments of Environment and Resource Management, Transport, and Main Roads, to give the ospreys a new and improved view of their surrounds. The pair of majestic birds have settled into their new surrounds and on Friday 3 July 2009 laid one egg with a second being laid 3 days later. On Thursday 12 August the first egg hatched. Unfortunately, as sometimes happens in nature, neither the hatchling nor the egg has survived.
During the summer non breeding season, council will be taking the website offline to rebuild it into a more dynamic viewing experience.
