Projects and Support

Projects and Support

The Maroochy Regional Bushland Botanic Gardens are in their infancy and will continue to develop and adapt to fulfil the changing needs and expectations of the community for centuries to come.

There are a number of significant projects in the pipeline that are subject to funding.

Short term needs

The short term needs are for significant educational facilities in the form of an interpretation centre, interpretation and plant information throughout the gardens, extended parking, and upgrading the bush walks to make them accessible to a greater number of people.

Donations

The generous donations from many individuals, community organisations and businesses have enabled the Friends to play a significant role in the establishment of the gardens. All donations and bequeaths are tax deductible and are managed through a designated donations account.

Support

The Maroochy Regional Bushland Botanic Gardens is one of council's ongoing community projects. Council staff work closely with the Friends to achieve the many objectives of the gardens as outlined in the master plan.

Council support

Council is funding the general maintenance of the site including mowing of lawns within the gardens, cleaning of facilities, the daily opening and closing of the gardens and the provision of a part time horticulturist. Council staff also provide support for the provision of designing and building structures in the gardens. A five year capital works program was approved by council in 2009 which will provide ongoing improvements to the gardens with the major item being the construction of an "Arts and Ecology Centre".

Community support

The Friends of the Maroochy Regional Bushland Botanic Gardens Inc is a community organisation that was established by Maroochy Shire Council in 1996. The group provided community input and support for the establishment of the gardens.

The Friends are involved in all aspects of the gardens including funding, planning, construction, landscaping, planting and maintenance, and are represented on the advisory board.

Funding

Much of the work in the gardens is done by volunteers from the Friends as there are currently no employed staff in the gardens. By successfully applying for grants and through donations, fundraising, and involvement of other community organisations, the Friends have funded the traffic bridge, the toilet block, major planting, landscaping, picnic tables, seating, rock pool, lawns, the bore and water features.

This is a very effective community-minded group of people who are all working together to make the Sunshine Coast a better place for the future. The Friends value the diverse interests and abilities of its members as they share the joy of helping to create this special facility.

Friends of the gardens

The Friends hold meetings on the second Thursday of each month at 7.00 pm at the Buderim Craft Cottage, Main Street Buderim.

Work days are held every Tuesday from 8.00 am.
