Fire Information and Warnings

For current bush fire information and warnings, visit the Rural Fire Service website.

Fire is a natural process which contributes to the health and biodiversity of our environment on the Sunshine Coast.

However fires which threaten homes and property can have dire consequences. Information on fire safety in the home and other buildings is available on the Queensland Fire and Rescue Service website.

Bush fire season

The bush fire season in the region traditionally starts in the‘dry season’ at the beginning of September and runs through until the beginning of the wet season over summer, though there may be a bush fire risk at other times depending on local conditions.

Bush fire is not only a threat to those in the bush. If you live in an urban fringe or semi-rural area you could also be at risk. If you own rural land, a holiday house, caravan or shack in a bush fire risk area, you need to be prepared there as well.

Council is responsible for bush fire management on council lands and also has a role in regulating smoke nuisance on private property. However, bushfire hazards and/or permits to light fires are the business of the Rural Fire Service.

Preparing for emergencies

To keep safe throughout the fire season:

  • Clear your property of fire hazards before the fire season.
  • Make a fire plan as part of your emergency plan and have equipment at the ready.
  • Prepare to protect yourself. The main risks from bushfire are heat stroke, dehydration and even asphyxiation rather than burns.

For further information about preparing for emergencies, visit the Emergency Management Australia website.
