Cooroy Library Project

Cooroy Library Project

The Mill Place project, incorporating the new Cooroy Library and a civic precinct, is due for completion in March 2010.

Project background

Mill Place has been designed as a landmark civic precinct, with the Cooroy Library as its centrepiece. The precinct will reflect the relaxed hinterland atmosphere and will serve as a welcoming community hub that draws people together.

In addition to the library, Mill Place will incorporate a community square, landscaping and parking areas. It will be located near the Butter Factory in Maple Street, Cooroy.

The new Cooroy Library will feature:

  • Community Lounge incorporating reading areas, newspapers, magazines and social spaces
  • "Peaceful Place" for quiet reading, reflection and study
  • Global Connect centre with highspeed broadband, online services, training facilities and meeting rooms
  • Heritage Studies Unit that focuses on the hinterland’s heritage
  • social spaces that reflect the needs of specific demographics (eg. Children’s Discovery Area, Young Adult Infotainment Zone
  • lending and reference collections
  • café
  • customer convenience facilities including public toilets, parents rooms, waiting area and bicycle racks
  • customer service points
  • administrative staff workroom.

The Library has been built with many environmentally sustainable design elements, which reduce the energy usage of the building and are also practical. Mill Place will meet the community’s recreational, education, cultural and creative needs. Brewster Hjorth Architects are Mill Place's appointed architects. They are renowned as one of Australia’s leading designers of public libraries.

Mill Place has attracted funding of $3.5 million from the State Government under the Q150 Legacy Infrastructre Program. This funding has been matched by council.
