Coolum Village Centre Urban Design Master Plan

Council is committed to enhancing the look and feel of public spaces on the Sunshine Coast and recognises the important role public art plays in this endeavour.

Call for expressions of interest for public art

The precinct adjacent to the Coolum Surf Lifesaving Club has been identified as a suitable location for public art inclusion.

Council invites expressions of interest from artists or art teams to undertake a public art project, as part of the development of the Coolum Village Precinct, that engages the imagination of the community and improves the amenity of the area.

Background

Council has started work on an urban design master plan for the Coolum village centre and adjacent foreshore.

The plan will incorporate five previous studies, and the current Department of Main Roads proposed upgrade of David Low Way, drawing together past and current consultation findings to produce one plan. Previous studies include:

• Coolum Esplanade Beautification Landscape Master Plan 1996
• Coolum Beach Issues and Vision Paper for the Maroochy Plan 2000 
• Tickle Park Landscape Master Plan 2003
• Integrated Land Use and Transport Study 2004
• Jack Morgan Park Concept Plan 2006. 

The aim of the plan is to improve village quality and safety by providing superior pedestrian, cycle, and vehicular traffic relationships.

Council will also trial new initiatives, such as:

• corporate vision of the Sunshine Coast being “Australia’s most sustainable region - vibrant, green, and diverse”
• transport priority of pedestrians, cycles and public transport ahead of cars
• place-making to create or protect towns with unique and individual identities
• draft public art policy to incorporate public art from the outset of urban design projects.

Future Development in Coolum

The master plan will provide a guide for future development in Coolum that will reflect the community’s place-making vision.
