Beckmans Road Upgrade: Tewantin Bypass

The Tewantin Bypass is the final link in the upgrade of Noosa's major arterial road network. Previous major road improvements delivered by council have included Eenie Creek Road from Noosaville to Sunshine Beach and Walter Hay Drive connecting Eenie Creek Road to the Sunshine Motorway.

The Tewantin Bypass will be a limited access road, which will provide an opportunity for motorists to travel between Eumundi Noosa Road and Cooroy Noosa Road without using Beckmans Road. This will result in improved trip times for through traffic and a reduction in congestion on the existing Beckmans Road.

Project background

Council hosted a series of public displays and meetings during 2005, where three options for the Beckmans Road upgrade were put forward to the community.

Following community consultation, council decided in November 2006 that Beckmans Road will become a full length service road to accommodate local traffic. A new limited access road will be constructed parallel to the service road.

Works were identified in the previous Noosa Council’s Ultimate Water Supply Report (10 Year Capital Works Report), to construct a new trunk water main along the Beckmans Road corridor, to alleviate a potential system supply failure to the Viewland Drive Reservoir and the Noosa Heads, Sunshine Beach and Peregian Beach supply zones.

Project scope

The road will generally be two lanes widening to four lanes at the roundabouts to cater for the expected traffic loads.

The scope of the project includes the following:

  • a new roundabout at the Eumundi Noosa Road and Lake Entrance Boulevard intersection
  • a 5-metre wide landscaped central traffic island on Eumundi Noosa Road and natural landscaping on all roundabouts and approaches
  • a roundabout at the intersection of the new Tewantin Bypass and Eumundi Noosa Road Intersection including connection to the old Beckmans Road
  • removal of the old Eumundi Noosa Road and Beckmans Road roundabout to allow for a new pedestrian underpass
  • a roundabout at the intersection of the new Tewantin Bypass and the extension of St Andrews Drive at the Queensland National Parks and Wildlife Depot site
  • a roundabout at the intersection of the new Tewantin Bypass and Cooroy Noosa Road including conversion of the old Beckmans Road intersection on Cooroy Noosa Road into a cul-de-sac
  • full on-road cycle lanes including green bike lanes at all intersections and roundabouts
  • a 3.7km water trunk main along Beckmans Road between Eumundi Noosa Road and Cooroy Noosa Road and also along Golf Course Drive from Cooroy Noosa Road to Greenway Court.

 Project update

Construction of the trunk water main is nearing completion.

The next stages of the Beckmans Road upgrade include:

  • negotiations with the state government to obtain a revocation of land within the state forest
  • detailed design work is currently being undertaken, for completion by December 2009
  • negotiate funding with the state government to fund the new road.

Unfortunately funding has not been provided by the State Government for construction of the road in the current roads implementation program.

Council will continue to work closely with the state government to have the project funded and the work programmed as soon as possible.

Project timing

Work will not commence until funding can be secured for the project.  At this stage no construction work will commence until funding has been secured, at this stage this would not be before 2011.

The Queensland Department of Main Roads is currently considering the availability of funding for the project. Work will not commence prior to mid-2010 and will take approx two years to complete.
